Thomas Pocklington Trust (TPT) and RNIB are collaborating with organisations from both the sight loss and wider charity sector as well as corporate organisations to create new opportunities for blind and partially sighted people to find employment through the Get Set Progress (GSP) Internship programme. Bristol Braille Technology CIC is delighted to be offering an internship as part of the Get Set Progress scheme.
About Bristol Braille Technology CIC
To invent and distribute new Braille technology and thereby advance blind people’s access to literacy, employment and independence.
What are the benefits of a Get Set Progress internship for me?
As part of your 9-month internship, you will be part of a large cohort of fellow interns and gain the following:

- Cover letter and speculative letter writing
- Application form writing
- Interview techniques
Job description
Role: Software development intern
Reporting to: Ed Roger Managing Director
Location: Hybrid; ideally in the office in Bristol but open to remote working
Salary: Based on the Real Living Wage
Contract type: Fixed Term, 9 months part time – 24 hours a week
Job Specification Information
A software developer to help build and test spacial Braille and tactile graphical applications for the Canute multiline Braille hardware.
Key areas of responsibility
- Building and testing applications written on and for Canute multiline Braille displays.
- Maintaining their own hours log and weekly reports
- Taking part in team specification meetings to design the applications and realise the work-flow we are building the application to facilitate
- Taking part in community testing once applications have reached Alpha build status.
Personal specification – Essential criteria:

- Willingness to travel to the TPT Hub in London for intern development events throughout the course of the internship programme (costs covered by TPT).
- Having not previously undertaken the Get Set Progress internship programme.
- Lived experience of sight loss
- A working knowledge of Braille, sufficient for computer programming in Braille
- Some background in either system administration or shell or Python programming
- Enthusiasm for testing new ideas
